UK’s All 4 picks up Seinfeld

Netflix paid Sony US$500m for the Seinfeld catalogue

UK broadcaster Channel 4’s AVoD platform All 4 has picked up local streaming rights to US sitcom Seinfeld from Sony Pictures Television.

All 4 is the latest buyer to pick up the 90s hit, after Netflix secured the global streaming rights in a US$500m deal in September last year and ViacomCBS bought the exclusive US cable rights a week later.

Whereas viewers still have to wait a year for Seinfeld to launch on Netflix and Viacom’s Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land, the first three seasons will drop on to All 4 in the UK this Friday. The remaining six will be made available every Friday until mid-March when the full nine can be streamed for free.

Originally aired between 1989 and 1998 on NBC, Seinfeld stars Jerry Seinfeld as a stand-up comedian whose life in New York City is made even more chaotic by his quirky group of friends who join him in wrestling with life’s most perplexing yet often trivial questions.

Charlie Palmer, managing editor of All 4, said: “I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off 2020 than with the addition of Seinfeld, one of the most influential sitcoms of all time, to All 4. In making it available for free, we hope to bring a whole new audience to a show that has already earned an enduring and loyal fanbase.”
