UK channels go behind bars

An odd commissioning coincidence has seen two UK broadcasters unveil observational documentaries based in Scottish prisons on the same day.

Channel 4 is taking its trademark ‘fixed rig’ documentary style, made popular by series including Educating… and 24 Hours in A&E, into Polmont Young Offenders Institution.

RDF Television is producing the as-yet-untitled obs doc. The series was commissioned by head of documentaries Nick Mirsky and deputy head of documentaries Amy Flanagan.

Meanwhile, satcaster Sky’s general entertainment channel Sky1 has greenlit Prison: First & Last 24 Hours, which will premiere on Wednesday October 28 at 22.00.

Producer STV Productions has been granted access to HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, HMP Low Moss, HMP Greenock and Scotland’s only women’s prison, HMP Cornton Vale. The series will follow inmates old and new, settling down in their new home or excitedly preparing for release.
