Twitter chops down Vine

Social media giant Twitter is axing its video-sharing app Vine and will cut 350 jobs – around 9% of its workforce – as part of cost-cutting measures.

The mobile app, which allows users to share six-second looping video clips, will be discontinued in the next few months, Twitter has announced.

Twitter acquired Vine in 2012 ahead of its launch the following year and helped grow its reach to over 40 million registered users at one point, although the app’s reach has been in decline in recent years.

Numerous social media stars have Vine to thank for launching their careers, including Cameron Dallas, who landed his own Netflix reality show after building up an audience using the video-sharing app.

The closure of Vine comes as Twitter culls around 350 jobs from its global workforce of over 3,800 as part of its aim to reach profitability by next year.
