Television New Zealand (TVNZ) has commissioned a local version of a UK gameshow that puts hypnotised contestants through physical and logistical challenges to win cash prizes.

Screentime New Zealand will produce You’re Back in the Room, based on a format created by UK prodco Tuesday’s Child for ITV.

The format has been licensed by BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) Australia/New Zealand for TVNZ network TV2.

Applications are now open with auditions to be held in April. The host and location are yet to be announced.

FremantleMedia Australia is producing an Australian version for Nine Network, hosted by Daryl Somers. The format, originally produced for ITV in the UK, has also been sold to Fox in the US, RCN in Colombia, RTL in the Netherlands, W9 in France and Pro Plus in Slovenia.

Andrew Shaw, TVNZ general manager of commissioning, production and acquisitions, said: “YBITR is laugh-out-loud funny. It’s the show for everyone and anyone. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Screentime New Zealand to bring this hilariously entertaining show into Kiwi homes.”

In related news, TVNZ has also picked up a package of shows from French producer and distributor Prime Entertainment. The deal includes 100 episodes from its Best of Fun franchise and the Director’s Short Cut series, which will air from this month on TVNZ’s linear channels and streaming service.
