Transgender doc wins int’l kids Emmy

Aussie drama Nowhere Boys won the series Emmy

MIPTV: A UK documentary about a transgender child was among the winners at the International Emmy Kids Awards in Cannes last night.

My Life: I Am Leo aired on CBBC in the UK in 2014 and told the story of a 13-year-old who was born a girl but has lived as a boy since the age of five.

The programme took home the top prize in the factual category. Other winners at the event, which was being held outside of the US for the first time, came from Australia, Japan, Norway and the Netherlands.

Australian drama Nowhere Boys won in the series category, while Ronja: The Robber’s Daughter, from Japan, was victorious in the animation group.

wolf_creekUK animated series Bing beat off competition from Iceland, Brazil and Japan to win in the preschool category, while Dutch feature film Rabarber was named best TV movie/miniseries.

Best i Mest, also known as All-Round Champion, took home the prize for best non-scripted entertainment, having originally aired in Norway.
