Tough topics dominate Int’l Kids Emmys

Hey Duggee won in the preschool category

MIPTV: Productions dealing with sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy were among the winners at the International Emmy Kids Awards in Cannes last night.

Norwegian public broadcaster NRK and Bivrost Film & TV were recognised in the digital category for their sexual abuse awareness week, which took place in November last year.

After extensive research and consultation with specialists, NRK used all of the channels available to it to open a dialogue about sexual abuse, adopting a direct approach to tackling the difficult topic.

Elsewhere, Brazilian broadcaster Globo took home the award for best series with Malhação: Viva a Diferença (Young Hearts). Set during a subway malfunction, it sees five girls get stuck in the same carriage as one of them goes into labour.

Three of the seven winners came from the UK, with season two of Studio AKA’s Hey Duggee, Blakeway North’s My Life: Born to Vlog and King Bert Productions’ Ratburger winning in the preschool, factual and miniseries categories, respectively.

Meanwhile, the format Fixa Bröllopet (Marrying Mum & Dad), from Fremantle and SVT in Sweden, won in the non-scripted entertainment category.

Also at the event, which was held in Cannes for the fourth year running, Kop Op (Heads Together), from Viking Film, VPRO Television and Job, Joris & Marieke in the Netherlands, won best animation.

“This is a difficult world for children to grow up in, with an increasing list of social problems and enormous change. The winning programmes help entertain, educate and prepare our children for the world they are about to face. This is an honourable task,” said International Academy president Bruce L Paisner.
