TNN's Robot Wars to warm up for WWF

Stateside cable network TNN has lined up a summer transmission date immediately before WWF for its version of the UK gameshow format Robot Wars, and signed up the presenters.

Entitled Robot Wars: Extreme Warriors, the show will feature US robot teams and will be telecast from Monday, August 20 in a 20:00/21:00 ET/PT slot. It will act as the lead-in programme to WWF Raw is War, US cable's highest rated series.

TNN has also picked up 23 episodes of the original British Robot Wars series for the same time slots. The format involves members of the public building war droids to battle against each other and other in-house robots in a futuristic arena. The original airs on BBC2 in the UK, as well as in 15 other territories, including Sweden, Italy and Germany.

The US version of the show has been produced by Mentorn Barraclough Carey, creator of the original show and part of the UK media group The TV Corporation. Tom Gutteridge and Stephen Carsey are executive producers.

The six-part TNT version will be hosted by WWF star Mick Foley (aka The Commissioner), with co-host of Fox's NFL Under the Helmet, Rebecca Grant, serving as pit reporter.

Mick Foley was described as {the perfect host{ for the show by Diane Robina, evp and gm at TNN, since the in-house robots, such as Sergeant Bash and Sir Killalot, were {much like the characters of World Wrestling Federation.{
