TMG’s Hertel to lead Bavaria Media sales

German producer Bavaria Media has appointed a local industry veteran as director of international sales at its new distribution division.

Carlos Hertel

Carlos Hertel, who previously led the international sales operations at Tele München Group (TMG), will head TV world sales at the new Bavaria Media International arm of the company.

A new distribution unit was established following parent company Bavaria Film’s sale of its 50% stake in Global Screen to former joint-venture partner Telepool.

Hertel worked at Telepool in Munich in various positions before his eight-year stint at TMG overseeing international sales. He began his career at Bavaria Media’s previous international TV sales division.

Bavaria Media CEO Rolf Moser said: “We are happy to have won Carlos Hertel, a former ‘Bavarian,’ to revive Bavaria’s legendary sales tradition.

“His multi-linguistic skills, his extensive branch network and long-lasting experience in international distribution qualify him as the ideal head of our new international sales division.”

Bavaria announced the sale of its stakes in Global Screen as well as in licensing unit EuroVideo Medien to Telepool in March. The deal ended all joint ventures between the two companies. Last year Bavaria Studios acquired Telepool’s 50% stake in its Bavariapool Services unit.

While Bavaria and Telepool are both subsidiaries of regional public broadcasters and even share Bayerischer Rundfunk as a common shareholder, their split followed a damning assessment last year by the Bavarian High Court of Auditors. This found that instead of saving money, the Global Screen JV was much costlier for the companies and that it achieved no “synergy effects.”
