TBS revives US Wipeout

Wipeout originally aired on ABC in the US

WarnerMedia-owned US cablenet TBS is rebooting obstacle course gameshow Wipeout, six years after it last aired in the US.

The series, which sees contestants compete over creative obstacle courses, first aired in the US on ABC in 2008 and ran for seven seasons until 2014. It has been adapted in 30 territories globally.

TBS has ordered 20 episodes of the revived series, which will feature new format twists and elements that will push the contestants’ athleticism and willpower to even greater extremes.

Endemol Shine North America, which made the original series, will also produce the reboot. Exec producing are Sharon Levy, DJ Nurre, Shyam Balsé and Kevin Wehrenberg. Matt Kunitz, who created the original, will serve as exec producer and showrunner.

“Now more than ever is the time to gather family and tune in to a fiercely wild and undeniably engaging viewing experience that mixes athletic action with hilarious antics,” said Brett Weitz, general manager of Warner Media’s TNT, TBS and truTV.

“We are honoured to partner with Endemol Shine to present a reimagined take on this universally beloved franchise that keeps audiences of all ages glued to the screen.”

Co-viewing for families locked down at home together and physical gameshows to make up for the lack of live sports have been two trends to begin emerging from the Covid-19 crisis. But how new episodes will be filmed and produced in an age of social distancing remains to be seen.
