TBS inks format pact with UK exec

Japanese broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) has teamed up with a UK-based format developer and producer to launch a new gameshow for the global market.

Dave Winnan

TBS has partnered with Dave Winnan, former director of format development and production at ITV Studios (ITVS), to create Time is Money: The Celebrity Life Hack Show. Details of the format will be unveiled at a breakfast presentation at Mipcom next month.

The studio-based game format “gives you all of the celebrity chaos and family fun you expect from a top variety show, but marries it with some top lifestyle take-home too,” Winnan told C21.

“We call it The Celebrity Life Hack Show and it’s got the best of The Generation Game married with top all-star banter, prizes and a unique commercial angle to help with those shiny-floor budgets.”

Shinichi Mishiro, head of format development at TBS, told C21 that Time is Money is “the first tangible fruit of the new partnership” with the UK-based flying producer.

Winnan’s credits include international versions of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Hell’s Kitchen, Love Island, How I Met Your Mother, Come Dine With Me, Saturday Night Takeaway, Chinese Dating, The Chase, Game of Chefs, Surprise Surprise and Four Weddings.

After leaving ITVS, he launched his own company, Global Creatives, in 2017 to capitalise on international demand for flying producers and format development expertise.

The alliance with Winnan continues TBS’s activities in the global format business. The company has, in association with New York’s Bellon Entertainment, licensed more than 200 formats globally and many thousands of episodes, according to Mishiro.

These include properties like America’s Funniest Home Videos (aka You’ve Been Framed), Takeshi’s Castle, Happy Family Plan (aka The Moment of Truth) and more recent hit Ninja Warrior.

“I love Ninja Warrior and helped develop Takeshi’s Castle at Viacom last year, so I’m a TBS fan first and foremost,” added Winnan.

“TBS is behind a couple of legendary shows from my time at ITV, Moment of Truth and Celebrities Under Pressure, so their track record of returning shiny-floor shows is right up there.”
