Talpa hears Voice Senior

MIPCOM: Dutch commercial broadcaster RTL4 and international format giant Talpa Global have unveiled a new version of singing competition format The Voice.

The Voice Senior is set to launch on the channel in August next year, with competitors on the show aged 65 or over.

The announcement was made at a press briefing here in Cannes by Talpa MD Maarten Meijs, who told C21 the commission is initially for a short run of four episodes.

“We have 67 versions of The Voice and 37 of The Voice Kids, and that made us think about The Voice Senior,” he said.

“The Voice Kids didn’t skew much younger than The Voice and we don’t expect The Voice Senior to skew very old.”

The surprise announcement came after Meijs revealed Talpa’s latest format, global reality experiment Lost in Translation.

The gameshow, which will be produced by Talpa, features 12 contestants from different countries on an island with one common goal: to build a boat to leave the island within 30 days to win a cash prize. However, for each contestant, there is only one fellow speaker of their native language.

Created and produced by John de Mol (Big Brother, Deal or No Deal), the format will feature one production with local versions for each participating country.

“It’s bold and ambitious,” Meijs added. “It’s the first truly international social experiment ever attempted. We are first presenting it to the market and who has interest in participating.

“It’s a big show, but we are able to offer a very attractive business model and financial proposition to our partners. We can amortise the cost over a large amount of countries.”
