Synchronicity adapts O’Hagan novel Mayflies

Glasgow-based indie Synchronicity Films is developing a limited series based on author Andrew O’Hagan’s latest novel, Mayflies.

Described as a “memorial to youth’s euphoria and to everyday tragedy,” Mayflies was published in the UK last month and will hit the US next March. Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth is Missing) will adapt the story for the screen.

Beginning in Scotland in the summer of 1986, the story centres on two friends brought together by their love of music, films and the rebel spirit. Once school is out, they head for a weekend in Manchester – the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain – and vow to live life differently.

Thirty years on and half a life away, the phone rings, bringing one of the friends the worst kind of news.

Claire Mundell, founder and creative director of Synchronicity Films, said: “From the very first page, Andrew’s beautiful novel had me totally enthralled. His depiction of a life-long friendship spanning the exuberance and promise of youth to the painful realities of later life is at once life-affirming, joyful and heart-breaking.

“In a time of turmoil, Mayflies is balm for the soul and will resonate with anyone who values the sustaining power of friendship. We cannot wait to bring this adaptation to the screen as a premium, prestige series.”
