SVT names new programme director

Swedish public broadcaster SVT has appointed a new permanent director of programmes, following Jan Helin’s change of roles last year.

Eva Beckman

Eva Beckman is stepping up from commissioner for culture, factual and events to oversee SVT’s range of entertainment, drama, culture, factual, kids and lifestyle content.

She replaces Thomas Hall, who had been filling the role on an acting basis since Helin segued to a new role overseeing news, sport and documentary last year.

Beckman has previously been a reporter, editor and project manager for a large number of SVT programmes and was also the pubcaster’s culture director.

SVT CEO Hanna Stjärne said: “Eva Beckman is brave and has a strong programme feel. She has the power, the knowledge and the judgement needed. I am very happy that Eva has agreed to become new programme director – she will find the programmes that will be tomorrow’s TV classic.”

Beckman added: “I can’t imagine a more exciting job than this. Historically, there are major changes in the TV world right now. The map is being redrafted on a largely daily basis, and my most important task will be to ensure that public service continues to be strong in the future. And of course, to make sure we have an exciting programme offering that the audience appreciates and does not want to be without.”

Beckman will take up her new position next week.
