Sundance, Sky, DR take on The Night Caller

The Night Caller

AMC Networks-owned streaming service Sundance Now in the US and Canada, Sky Crime in the UK and Danish broadcaster DR have pre-bought an Australian true crime series from Abacus Media Rights.

The Night Caller (4×60’), produced by Salon Pictures and EQ Media Group, is an original production for Australian SVoD service Stan. Abacus is launching at the virtual edition of French event Mipcom next month.

The programme focuses on Australian serial killer Eric Edgar Cooke, who committed a series of murders in Perth in the early 1960s.

It follows creator and director Thomas Meadmore as heads back to his childhood home in Perth, where he spends time with those closest to Cooke and his victims, including Cooke’s wife and the two men wrongly convicted of his crimes.

Meadmore said: “I’ve returned to Australia, the place where I was brought up, to examine an urban legend that shaped my parents’ existence, and thus me too, in ways I hadn’t realised until I shared time with those most deeply affected by Cooke and explored how the trauma of these events still live on in these people, as well as the broader community today.”
