COMIC-CON: AMC Networks-owned SVoD services Sundance Now and Shudder have jointly acquired European satcaster Sky’s forthcoming original supernatural thriller series A Discovery of Witches.

The show will be added to both SVoD platforms on an as-yet-unconfirmed date. Additionally, AMC channel SundanceTV has acquired the second-window linear rights to the series.

The eight-episode show, adapted from Deborah Harkness’s bestselling novel, focuses on the unearthing of an ancient manuscript that threatens to unravel a fragile peace that has existed between witches, vampires and daemons, who live in plain sight among humans.

It is produced by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner’s Bad Wolf label (Torchwood, Da Vinci’s Demons) and has been adapted for the screen by showrunner Kate Brooke (Mr Selfridge). Harkness and Tranter exec produce and Juan Carlos Medina (Painless) serves as director.

The deal was brokered by Endeavor Content and Aurelie de Troyer for Sundance Now and Shudder. Sky’s international production and distribution arm Sky Vision, which co-funded the series, handles international distribution rights. It was announced at Comic-Con International, which began yesterday in San Diego.

A Discovery of Witches was originally commissioned for Sky1 by head of drama Anne Mensah and director of Sky1 Adam MacDonald, with the series landing in the UK in September.
