Sundance receives Tele München’s Rose

The Name of the Rose is being filmed in Rome

US network SundanceTV is partnering with Italian broadcaster Rai and Germany’s Tele München Group (TMG) on a forthcoming series adapted from an Umberto Eco novel and starring Rupert Everett.

The Name of the Rose is being coproduced by Italian duo 11 Marzo Film and Palomar with TMG, Rai Fiction and now SundanceTV.

The limited series will launch 2019 on Rai and SundanceTV, and will be available to stream on Sundance Now in the US and Canada.

Tele München International (TMI) is distributing the show globally and has already sealed deals with broadcasters including European satcaster Sky, NRK in Norway and YLE in Finland.

The screenplay was written by Andrea Porporati and Nigel Williams, with Italian filmmaker Giacomo Battiato also on board.

The Name of the Rose is based on the eponymous novel by Eco and will star John Turturro and Michael Emerson alongside Everett.

Set in Italy in 1327, it follows a Franciscan monk and his novice as they arrive at a secluded monastery in the Alps, where they witness a series of mysterious murders.

The novel has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide since it was first published in 1980.

Herbert L Kloiber, MD of TMG and sales arm TMI, said the show would be an “authentic and multi-layered vision of Eco’s unparalleled novel.”
