STV tracks down BBC’s Hunter

Scotland-based STV Productions has appointed a BBC commissioner as its creative director for factual programming.

Craig Hunter

Craig Hunter has joined the company behind BBC1 drama series The Victim having spent the past four years with the UK pubcaster, where he was lead commissioning editor for natural history and specialist factual and the factual lead for commissioning in Scotland.

Hunter has worked with Scottish production companies to deliver network ideas and projects across all factual genres to the BBC.

At the production arm of Scottish broadcaster STV, he will work alongside Sarah Brown, creative director for drama, and Gary Chippington, creative director for entertainment.

His commissioning credits include the BBC’s Blue Planet Live, Drowning in Plastic, Inside the Factory, The Doctor Who Gave Up Drugs, Big Life Fix and The Parkinson’s Drug Trial: A Miracle Cure?.

On the production side, Hunter has worked as an executive producer for BBC Science and for independent production company Keo Films, with credits across specialist factual, features, current affairs and documentaries, including Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die for BBC2.

The appointment comes as part of STV’s three-year strategy for creative and digital growth, through which the company is investing £15m (US$19.6m) in content and digital to “position STV as a major creative force in Scotland and beyond.”

David Mortimer, who moved from Tinopolis to become MD of STV Productions in September, said of Hunter: “His vast experience of productions in the nations will be invaluable as STV Productions continues its mission to deliver fantastic shows produced out of Scotland for UK and international broadcasters.”
