Starz revisits Gregory drama

The White Queen

The White Queen was a ‘phenomenal performer’ for Starz

US cablenet Starz has ordered a spin-off from its original drama The White Queen with Emma Frost again attached as showrunner.

The White Princess, from the UK’s Company Pictures, is being adapted from Philippa Gregory’s best-selling novel of the same name and tells the story of England’s War of the Roses from the perspective of women.

The eight-episode show, currently in pre-production, acts as a follow-up to Starz’s The White Queen and will exec produced by Frost and Gregory, along with Playground’s Colin Callender (The White Queen, The Dresser, The Missing) and Company Pictures’ Michele Buck (Parade’s End, Sex Traffic).

“The White Queen was a phenomenal performer at Starz, averaging 4.8 million multiplatform viewers per episode in the US,” said Starz MD Carmi Zlotnik.

“There is a dearth of programming that tells women’s stories and The White Queen was embraced with great success by audiences worldwide. The passionate fanbase for Philippa Gregory’s historical novels is undeniable and we are confident The White Princess will become the next must-see fandom drama series.”

The White Princess will film on location in Bristol, UK, and will air on Starz in 2017, with the US net retaining all network pay TV and SVoD rights to the project.
