Starz pick up Elizabeth I drama

Lionsgate-owned US cablenet Starz has greenlit Becoming Elizabeth, an eight-part period drama following the early life of England’s Queen Elizabeth I.

Jeffrey A Hirsch

The series looks at a young Elizabeth Tudor long before she ascended the throne. The princess was raised an orphan and made a name for herself in the royal court following the death of her father, Henry VIII.

Becoming Elizabeth is co-written and created by Anya Reiss, alongside an all-female writing team including Emily Ballou, Anna Jordan and Suhayla El-Bushra. Reiss is set to executive produce the series with George Ormond and George Faber from UK prodco The Forge.

Jeffrey AHirsch, CEO of Starz, said: “The world of Becoming Elizabeth is visceral and dangerous – judgments are rendered quickly and no one is safe. This series explores the Tudor reign and young Elizabeth, who would become England’s ‘Gloriana’ and one of history’s most dynamic figures, through a new lens which we think viewers will find highly engaging.”

“This is Elizabeth as you’ve never seen her before, a teenager finding her way in a treacherous world, and in Anya’s hands she’s a truly electrifying character,” said Ormond. “Starz immediately embraced the ambition and vision of the series and we’re thrilled to be collaborating with them on it.”
