Starz extends outlandish adventure

US cablenet Starz has extended the run of its fantasy adventure series Outlander, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon.

The second run, which will be made up of at least 13 episodes, follows Gabaldon’s novel Dragonfly in Amber.

The series follows a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743 and thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened.

It’s being produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television. Battlestar Galactica’s Ron Moore is again on board as exec producer.

Chris Albrecht, Starz CEO, said the season had been ordered following the “overwhelming support” Outlander had received from viewers. The first 16-part season debuted earlier in August, with the first episode setting multi-platform viewing records by claiming more than five million views in the first week, according to the network.

Starz will retain all domestic multi-platform pay TV rights to the original series.
