Stan secures content from trio

Australian subscription VoD service Stan has picked up shows from US cablenet Starz and local distributors Studiocanal and Pinnacle Films as it gears up to battle Netflix.

While all three deals are non-exclusive, they will add considerable volume to the platform, whose library consists of nearly 7,000 hours of film and TV content.

The Starz agreement encompasses all four seasons of the Spartacus franchise, with Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena available from March 1.

Coming soon are seasons one and two of Magic City and Party Down, plus an array of cult films such as Ghost in the Shell.

The Studiocanal package includes all five Twilight films, the Rambo and Saw franchises and recent releases Broken City and Killing Them Softly.

Among the titles from Pinnacle are Dallas Buyers Club, Drive, Jobs, Winter’s Bone, Larry Crowne, Dark Skies, The Reef and Hit and Run.

Pinnacle had already confirmed a deal with Netflix, which launches in Australia and New Zealand on March 28, as had fellow Oz indie distributors Madman Entertainment, Transmission and Rialto.

Co-owned by Nine Entertainment (NEC) and Fairfax Media, Stan launched on January 26 and is free for the first 30 days before costing A$10 (US$7.80) per month.

Delivering its half-yearly results on Thursday, NEC reported Stan’s subscriber numbers were tracking three or four months ahead of expectations and predicted more than 100,000 sign-ups (paid subs and those on the free trial) by mid-March.

NEC and Fairfax have said each is investing A$50m in the platform over an unspecified number of years to reach breakeven.
