Spectrum mad about sitcom reboot

Helen Hunt (second left) will direct the first episode of the rebooted Mad About You

US media giant Charter Communications has picked up the reboot of Mad About You, which will see Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt reprise their roles from the 1990s sitcom.

The Sony Pictures Television-produced limited event series is set to launch on Charter’s fledgling VoD service Spectrum Originals in late 2019, with Hunt directing the first episode.

Peter Tolan has been tapped as showrunner, as well as executive producer and writer for the series, while Danny Jacobson, who co-created the show with Reiser, will serve as an executive consultant.

Hunt and Reiser will executive produce alongside Brian Volk-Weiss, Michael Pelmont and Matthew Ochacher for Comedy Dynamics.

Mad About You, which originally aired between 1992 and 1999 on NBC in the US, starred Reiser and Hunt as a married couple living in New York City.

The pair said in a joint statement: “We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show – as soon as we can remember what’s funny about being older.”

Katherine Pope, head of original content at Charter Communications, added: “Two decades ago, fans fell in love with this show, and this time will be no different as Paul, Helen and Peter explore modern marriage through the eyes of two people who have just become empty-nesters. We can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with the Buchmans all over again.”

Last year Charter commissioned its first original TV series, Sony- and Bruckheimer-produced drama LA’s Finest, a spin-off from the 2003 action movie Bad Boys II starring and executive produced by Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.

Other projects include street racing drama Curfew, coproduced with Sky in the UK, and Lionsgate series Manhunt.

Its original series will be available exclusively to Spectrum video subscribers on-demand and ad-free.
