Spanish net joins Globo’s Supermax

Broadcasters in Spain and Argentina have joined as coproduction partners on the first Spanish-language drama to come from Brazilian giant Globo.

Supermax is being produced in-house at Globo Studios, with Argentinian filmmaker Daniel Burman on board as showrunner. Production started in April on the series, which follows eight people who travel to a remote prison to participate in a reality show.

Mediaset España will air Supermax on Canal Cuatro after joining as a copro partner, joining Argentina’s TVP and Mexican network TV Azteca on the show, which has been billed as Globo’s first original production for the international market.

wolf_creekThe Brazilian broadcaster has previously coproduced shows in Spanish with Mexico’s Azteca and US network Telemundo, but Supermax will be the first Spanish-language original produced and financed solely by Globo.

The 10-part series will be sold by Globo Internacional and has already been picked up by Azteca in Mexico.

Raphael Corrêa Netto, Globo’s executive director of international business, said he wanted to reach more than 500 million Spanish-speaking viewers with the show while “expanding our relationship with key players in this market, such as our partners TV Azteca, Mediaset España and TVP – Argentina.”

Manuel Villanueva, content general director at Mediaset España, added that the show “seems an ideal project to become our first international coproduction filmed in Spanish.”
