Spanish drama lands Int’l Emmy

La Casa de Papel was coproduced by Netflix and Vancouver Media

Spanish series La Casa de Papel was among the winners at the 46th annual International Emmy Awards in New York on Monday.

The series, which took home the best drama series award, was produced by Vancouver Media for Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia and focuses on a mysterious professor who oversees a gang of eight thieves who lock themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain.

Elsewhere Endemol Shine Group (ESG) was a big winner on the night, with the company’s CEO Sophie Turner Laing taking home the International Emmy Directorate Award, which was presented by Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden.

The production giant also took home best TV movie or mini-series for same-sex romance Man in an Orange Suit, which is produced for the BBC and PBS’ Masterpiece by ESG-owned Kudos.

Endemol Shine Israel’s Nevsu, which sees a mixed family navigating prejudices and tensions while raising their five-year-old daughter, won best comedy having originally aired on Reshet13.

Finally, Endemol Shine Boomdog’s Universo drama El Vato took the best non-English language US primetime programme award for its second season.

The documentary prize went to Goodbye Aleppo from BBC Arabic, which followed four young citizen journalists who became trapped in the siege of Aleppo in December 2016.

Blindspot star Sullivan Stapleton and producer Julie Plec presented the International Emmy Founders Award to record-setting writer, director, and producer, Greg Berlanti, who currently has 15 shows in production.

Lars Mikkelsen accepted the Emmy for best performance by an actor for his role as priest Johannes in Herrens Veje-Ride Upon the Storm for DR Drama and Arte France.

The awards ceremony, presented by comedian Hari Kondabolu, also featured Anna Schudt who won best performance by an actress for her role as comedian Gaby Köster in Ein Schnupfen hatte auch gereicht (The Sniffles Would Have Been Just Fine) from Zeitsprung Pictures for RTL Television in Germany.
