Sony unleashes Mad Dogs

Mad Dogs

The US remake of Mad Dogs

Broadcasters across Europe, Africa and Australasia have picked the US adaptation of drama Mad Dogs from Sony Pictures Television (SPT) ahead of its debut on Amazon.

More than 140 territories have now acquired the programme, based on the format created by Cris Cole for Left Bank Pictures and British Sky Broadcasting.

The original ran for four seasons and 14 episodes on Sky1 in the UK. Amazon ordered a pilot of the remake for its Prime Instant Video streaming service back in 2014 and it will premiere on the service in the US, UK and Germany tomorrow.

Movistar+ has picked up the series in Spain, while MTG has acquired it for Viaplay in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

The show, produced by Left Bank Pictures, MiddKid Productions and Amazon Studios in association with SPT, has also been sold to Nelonen in Finland, Telenet in Belgium, D-Smart in Turkey and AXN in Central Eastern Europe.

Meanwhile, OSN has picked up the series for the Middle East, Mnet will show it across Africa, and Sky has bought the drama for New Zealand.

Across Asia, buyers include pan-regional SVoD platform HOOQ – covering the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and India – and Viacom’s Colors Infinity in India.

“Mad Dogs has been a huge hit in the UK and there is clearly an equally high appetite for the US series,” said Keith LeGoy, president of international distribution at SPT.

Mad Dogs tells the story of a group of 40-something underachievers who gather in Belize to celebrate the retirement of one of their friends. But a series of dramatic events unfold, exposing a web of lies, deception and murder.
