Sony signs up Good Doctor’s Highmore

US studio Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has agreed an overall production deal with Freddie Highmore, star of ABC drama The Good Doctor.

Highmore’s two-year arrangement with the studio, which is behind the hit US drama, will see him develop scripted projects for TV and streaming services.

He previously wrote for A&E drama Bates Motel, which he also starred in, and is penning the first episode of The Good Doctor’s second season.

The deal with SPT will also see the British actor work on international coproductions through his label Alfresco Pictures. The Good Doctor, which was extended into a second season in March, is based on the Korean series of the same name that aired on KBS2.

Jeff Frost, Chris Parnell and Jason Clodfelter, SPT’s president and co-presidents respectively, said they noted Highmore’s “passion and creativity and are thrilled to expand our relationship with him and his production company Alfresco Pictures.”

The Good Doctor follows a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who leaves his quiet country life behind to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit.

Russian pay TV and SVoD firm Amedia TV, Sky Living in the UK, TF1 in France and CTV in Canada have all bought the first season.
