Sony revives Astro Boy

The first Japanimation series to become a big hit in the West is making a comeback, with a new series of the 50-year-old toon Astro Boy launching down at MipTV this month.

Aimed at kids aged 6-11, some 52 new half-hours (pictured) are on Sony Pictures Television's Cannes slate, based on the original series from the godfather of Manga, Osamu Tezuka.

The show continues Tezuka's comics-to-TV tale of a scientist who builds a robot boy after the death of his own son. Set in 2003, the original series sold well internationally and was produced by Mushi Productions of Japan.
