MIPCOM: Channel 4 in the UK, AXN in Japan and Spain’s Moviestar are amongst broadcasters to have picked up NBC drama Timeless.

The show, from Sony Pictures Television (SPT), Davis Entertainment, Kripke Enterprises and MiddKid Productions, follows a mysterious villain who steals a time machine in order to rewrite history.

It is written by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan, who exec produce alongside John Davis, John Fox, Marney Hochman and director Neil Marshall, with SPT taking global distribution rights.

C4 will air the show on its youth-skewing channel E4 while OSN in the Middle East, Fox in Italy, AXN in Portugal, Viacom18’s Colors Infinity in India and China’s Sohu have also acquired the series.

Keith LeGoy, president of distribution at SPT, said the show “offers viewers a thrilling and boisterous ride through time to revisit some of the most pivotal moments in our collective history.”

The series is part of SPT’s slate here in Cannes, along with Blacklist: Redemption, Notorious, Kevin Can Wait and The Halcyon.

The show has been the subject of controversy after Spanish producer Onza Entertainment filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in the US in September against SPT, NBC and Ryan and Kripke.

It claimed the show was based on an idea from its format El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time).
