US producer and distributor Sonar Entertainment has boarded event series Das Boot, joining Germany’s Bavaria Fernsehproduktion and Sky in Germany as coproducer and distributor.

Production on the 8×60’ series, a sequel to the classic 1981 war movie, will begin next year to air worldwide in 2018.

Sonar holds all global distribution rights to the series, with the exception of Sky’s five European territories: Germany, Austria, the UK, Ireland and Italy.

The €25m (US$28m) production is based on the novels Das Boot and Die Festung by Lothar-Günther Buchheim and will rejoin the crew of a submarine during the Second World War, picking up from events that happened at the end of the movie.

The show will be set in 1942 and will focus mainly on the German point of view as submarine warfare became increasingly brutal.

“This project reflects Sonar’s ongoing strategic commitment to pursue fully integrated creative and commercial collaborations with top tier global partners to develop and distribute high end content,” said David Ellender, president of global distribution and coproductions at Sonar.

“Das Boot is a property with broad based appeal to networks and broadcasters worldwide and will play exceptionally well to diverse audiences throughout the world.”

The drama is being adapted by Tony Saint and Johannes W Betz, with Bavaria Fernsehproduktion’s Oliver Vogel and Moritz Polter exec producing alongside Sonar’s Jenna Santoianni and Sky’s Marcus Ammon and Frank Jastfelder.
