Smithsonian, History uncover Darwin’s Secret

Darwin’s Secret was ordered for ZDF’s Terra X factual slot

US cablenet Smithsonian Channel and History Channel in Australia have become the first broadcasters to pick up a documentary about a voyage that led to Charles Darwin formulating his Theory of Evolution.

Darwin’s Secret (1×50’) has been produced by German historian and documentary filmmaker Jürgen Stumpfhaus through his InspiraTV shingle for public broadcaster ZDF’s Terra X factual slot.

The pubcaster’s commercial arm ZDF Enterprises is distributing the doc globally and has secured the first sales with Smithsonian and History.

The show looks at Darwin’s epic voyage aboard HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836, when the 22-year-old Cambridge University student served as the ship’s scientific officer.

Discoveries on the voyage would lead to his Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, which became a game changer in science and is behind all current thinking about life on Earth.

The doc follows a new expedition to retrace the historic route of the Beagle, with scientists and a direct descendent of the original captain on board.
