US cablenet Smithsonian Channel is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek with a documentary exploring its influence on science and technology.

The two-hour special Building Star Trek comes as buzz builds around CBS’s forthcoming reboot of the iconic sci-fi series, which was acquired recently by Netflix in 188 territories.

Smithsonian’s doc will air on September 4 and is being produced by Toronto-based Yap Films, while it will also air on Discovery in Canada.

The special takes a look at the lasting influence the original Star Trek series has had on the world since making its debut in September 1966.

Concepts featured on the show that have gone on to enter mainstream society include hand-held communication devices, desktop computers and touch screens.

The special will also follow the conservation team from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum as they attempt to restore and conserve the 11ft, 250lb model of the USS Enterprise made for the original series.

The original Star Trek show ran for three seasons between 1966 and 1969 on NBC in the US and has spawned more than a dozen feature films, including 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
