SMG orders Dream Defenders for China

Shanghai Media Group (SMG) has partnered with Singapore studio Tiny Island Productions to develop a Chinese version of the latter’s toon Dream Defenders.

The new Dream Defenders series will incorporate elements of Chinese mythology

SMG, working via its content distribution division WingsMedia, has tasked Tiny Island with developing a new Dream Defenders TV series, with episodes that incorporate elements of Chinese mythology.

The CGI-animated series centres on twins who defend the real world from nightmare monsters and has been sold into more than 60 countries by distributor DreamWorks Classics.

The two companies will also collaborate on WingsMedia’s sci-fi series Starship MZ, which SMG hopes will become the Chinese equivalent to the Marvel Universe franchise.

SMG last year launched the first season of the sci-fi themed reality TV show Starship MZ: 2049.

“By leveraging WingsMedia’s vast experience and expertise, while tapping into China’s historical and rich legacy of art and culture, together we will bring China-made sci-fi to the next level,” said David Kwok, CEO of Tiny Island Productions.

Kwok added that he is keen to explore opportunities with new technologies such as virtual reality to give Chinese audiences a fuller experience when watching the show.

“Imagine after watching an episode you can pick up your smartphone, slide it into a pair of VR goggles that cost only US$5 in China, and dive into the world of the show to further immerse yourselves in the story.”
