Sky wins exclusive Showtime carriage

Sky Atlantic will become the exclusive European home to Showtime’s original drama series following a deal between the satcaster and Showtime parent CBS Corp.

The agreement includes the eagerly anticipated return of Twin Peaks, as well as existing hits such as Ray Donovan and The Affair.

Sky had previously licensed Showtime content from CBS on a programme-by-programme basis but will now become the exclusive home to its shows in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy.

This follows the merger of UK satcaster BSkyB with its sister operations Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia, which was concluded at the end of 2014.

The deal will span all new and future series, including new drama Billions, and will provide on-demand access to archive programming such as Dexter and Nurse Jackie.

Sky Atlantic is already the exclusive home to HBO content in the UK and has invested heavily in original content, including Showtime coproduction Penny Dreadful.

It represents the first time CBS Corporation has licensed Showtime content exclusively to a single media company across multiple European territories, and follows a similar deal between CBS and Bell Media for Showtime in Canada last year.

Gary Davey, MD of content at Sky, said: “This is one of the most important content deals Sky has ever agreed, cementing Sky’s position as the market leader in Europe for world-class drama.

“We are enormously proud that Sky will be the exclusive home to new Showtime programmes for many years to come, building on a relationship that has grown over time including producing three successful seasons of Penny Dreadful together.”
