Sky, HBO to deliver Sister’s Baby

European satcaster Sky and US premium cablenet HBO are partnering on another drama coproduction, this time a darkly comic tale from Lucy Gamer and debut screenwriter Siân Robins-Grace.

Jane Featherstone

The Baby is being produced by Sister, the drama prodco led by Jane Featherstone, Stacey Snider and Elisabeth Murdoch, and Proverbial Pictures.

The Baby is Robins-Grace’s screenwriting debut, following her work on critically acclaimed hit Sex Education, which she developed with creator Laurie Nunn.

The series, which will air on Sky linear network Sky Atlantic and streaming service Now TV in the UK, is described as a funny an raw examination of motherhood as an institution: a set of unspoken rules that affect women differently depending on how they’re viewed by society.

It focuses on a 38-year-old who unexpectedly has a baby, which twists her life into a horror show.

The eight-episode first season will be exec produced by Featherstone (Chernobyl, Giri/Haji), Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl, Game of Thrones), Naomi de Pear (The Power, Flowers), Katie Carpenter (Landscapers, The Bisexual) and Robins-Grace. It will be filmed in the UK next year.

Gaymer is also on the female-led creative team as producer, having previously filled similar roles on Gangs of London and Liar.

Cameron Roach

The Baby was commissioned for Sky by UK MD of content Zai Bennett, head of drama Cameron Roach and Sky Studios senior commissioning editor Gabriel Silver. HBO programming president Casey Bloys and exec VP of programming Amy Gravitt commissioned for the US cablenet.

In a joint statement, Robins-Grace and Gaymer said: “With The Baby, we want to explore the powerful anxiety around the question of whether or not to have children – the ambivalence of not knowing, the bafflement at everyone else’s certainty and the suspicion that the whole thing is one millennia-long scam.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such a phenomenal team of producers to help us bring this weird baby into the world with HBO and Sky.”

Roach added: “The Baby is by turns dark, comedic and horrifying. The vision that Siân and Lucy are bringing to life is truly unique.”

Gravitt said: “Siân and Lucy’s exploration of motherhood is as funny and resonant as it is twisted. The Baby gives a voice to all the women who just don’t know. We’re thrilled to be partnering again with Jane Featherstone, Carolyn Strauss and our friends at Sky.”
