Sky gives Pluto.TV cash boost

European satcaster Sky has invested US$1m in video aggregator Pluto.TV, having already put half that amount into the US business last month.

California-based Pluto.TV launched earlier this year and organises online content into themed channels across mainstream and niche subjects.

Along with its previous investment in Pluto.TV, the UK arm of Sky has also invested in other US tech firms such as ad-focused Sharethrough, internet TV firm Roku and video reality company Jaunt.

The satcaster, which last week took complete control of Sky Italia and a 90% stake in Sky Deutschland, has a San Francisco office to focus on partnering with tech firms that will give it insights into viewer behaviour.

Most recently it ploughed US$7m into US-based online network Whistle Sports and will work with the start-up to create content aimed at younger sports fans.
