Sky Deutschland goes OTT

21st Century Fox-owned Sky Deutschland has moved into the German and Austrian streaming video-on-demand (VoD) market with a new service called Snap.

Snap subscribers will have on-demand access to TV shows and movies from Sky’s catalogue, including episodes of HBO series True Blood and Boardwalk Empire. Sky said it plans to add new content, including episodes of Game of Thrones, in the coming months.

Snap is available to non-Sky subscribers for €9.90 (US$13.60) a month and acts as a compliment to the pay TV operator’s existing Sky Go and Sky Anytime VoD.

The new service will compete with Amazon’s LoveFilm’s service, ProSiebenSat.1’s Maxdome and Vivendi’s Watchever, and has beaten US streaming giant Netflix to the sizeable German market.

Netflix has so far expanded to several European countries but Germany and Austria are on the long list of countries that don’t have access to the subscription VoD service.

The Snap catalogue of content will be available on demand via the web, iPad and Samsung Smart TVs. Sky said Apple’s iPhone will be “added soon,” with Samsung Galaxy products and other platforms and devices to follow afterwards.
