Showtime preps hip-hop doc

The documentary arm of premium US cablenet Showtime is working on a limited documentary series about notorious hip-hop artist Tekashi 6ix9ine, called SuperVillain.

SuperVillain looks at hip-hop artist Tekashi 6ix9ine’s career

Based on the Rolling Stone feature about the rapper by journalist Stephen Witt, the Showtime Documentary Film series will look at how the former deli worker used social media to achieve fame.

Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment will executive produce and the series is produced by Imagine Documentaries, Rolling Stone and Simon and Jonathan Chinn’s Oscar-winning prodco Lightbox.

Other executive producers include Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein of Imagine Documentaries, Gus Wenner of Rolling Stone, Jonathan and Simon Chinn, and Witt.

“The bizarre and complicated rise of Tekashi 6six9ine is a story of our times,” said Vinnie Malhotra, executive VP of non-fiction programming at Showtime Networks.

“Beyond becoming one of the most notorious hip hop artists of this generation, his story speaks volumes of the impact of social media and manufactured celebrity in our society.”
