Showtime, Lynch return to Twin Peaks

US cablenet Showtime has confirmed that cult drama series Twin Peaks will return in 2016, with all nine episodes to be written by creators David Lynch and Mark Frost.

Twin PeaksThe new episodes will go into production in 2015 and will be shown on the network in 2016, marking the 25th anniversary of the programme’s last airing.

Four-time Oscar nominee Lynch will also direct every episode of the new series, which will be set in the present day and “continue the lore of the original series,” Showtime said.

The first two seasons of Twin Peaks follow the inhabitants of a quaint town in the US Pacific North-West who are stunned after their homecoming queen Laura Palmer is murdered. FBI agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, is brought in to investigate the case, which becomes increasingly surreal and twisted.

The iconic series originally aired between 1990 and 1991 on ABC in the US.

Speculation around the show’s revival reached fever pitch over the weekend when Lynch, director of films such as The Elephant Man and Blue Velvet, tweeted “that gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee” in reference to some of the show’s iconic pieces of dialogue.
