US premium pay-TV network Showtime is bringing the curtain down on its long-running comedy Weeds.

The series, about a cannabis-dealing mum, will end after its forthcoming 13-episode eighth season, which is due to begin on July 1. It first aired in 2005.

The 11th installment in this new season will also mark the show’s 100th episode.

Weeds, which is produced by Lionsgate, is “a seminal series for Showtime and was key in establishing the network as a home for great original programming,” said David Nevins, the network’s president of entertainment.

Showtime is also the home of Dexter, Nurse Jackie and Homeland. Jackie was renewed for a fifth season last month, while the channel has also ordered two pilots – Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan – to series.
