Shorts, box sets added to RTÉ Player

Irish pubcaster RTÉ is preparing to launch an updated version of its on-demand service offering new shortform content and box sets.

RTÉ Player will offer content including original shorts

The new version of RTÉ Player is expected to launch before the end of the year and will offer live and on-demand viewing with the ability to personalise the service.

Box sets and curated on-demand libraries across 10 genres will be available along with new original RTÉ Player shorts, as well as access to all RTÉ’s live channels on any screen.

RTÉ Player is available via the web and on mobile devices, as well as via OTT services including Saorview, Chromecast, Android TV and Apple TV. RTÉ is working with IT consultancy Fincons Group and Dutch TV app development company 24i on the revamped service.

Múirne Laffan, RTÉ’s chief digital officer, said: “The delivery of the next generation RTÉ Player is hugely important for RTÉ’s future.

“It is a sophisticated proposition that will position us to meet evolving audience expectations and compete within a highly competitive, globalised media environment.”

Last year former president and MD of Discovery Networks Northern Europe Dee Forbes joined the Irish pubcaster as its first female director general.
