Shomi prepares for Catastrophe

Canadian subscription VoD service Shomi, the joint venture between Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications, has licensed a UK comedy about an unplanned pregnancy.

Catastrophe, written by and starring Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, follows an Irish woman and an American man as they come to terms with their impending parenthood.

The supporting cast includes Ashley Jensen (Extras) and Carrie Fisher (Star Wars), while it is executive produced by Horgan, Delaney, Richard Allen-Turner, Kara Baker and Jon Thoday.

Shomi will premiere the six-part series, which was renewed for a second season by its UK broadcaster Channel 4 in January, on May 10.

The show is coproduced by the London-based production companies Avalon Television, Birdbath Productions and Merman Films, which was set up by Pulling creator Horgan last year.

Other comedies Shomi has acquired recently include The Office, Parks & Recreation and 30 Rock, along with more than 375 movies.
