Shomi claims CBS’s Virgin

Fledgling Canadian VoD service Shomi has acquired the exclusive first-window rights to The CW’s hit comedy Jane the Virgin, via a content deal with CBS International.

Jane the Virgin, recently ordered for a full season, is from CBS TV Studios and Warner Bros Television, in association with Electus, and follows a religious girl who is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Shomi, which launched this week in Canada, has also picked up exclusive rights to The CW’s forthcoming series The Messengers.

Under the deal with CBS Studios, the joint venture between Shaw Media and Rogers Media also took exclusive streaming rights for series including NCIS, and its spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans series.

The agreement also makes Shomi the subscription VoD home to CBS dramas Madam Secretary, as well as Reckless, Hawaii Five-O, Elementary, Star Crossed, Extant and Under the Dome. The entire run of Californication will also be available as well as classic sci-fi series including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: The Original Series and Twilight Zone.

Last month, Shomi struck an alliance with US giant Netflix for new survivalist thriller Between, marking the American streamer’s first original Canadian series.

The service has been stocking up on US programmes recently with series such as forthcoming Rob Thomas series iZombie.
