Shaun special flocks to Germany

A German broadcaster has pre-bought the forthcoming Shaun the Sheep Christmas special, which is due to air on BBC1 in the UK next winter.

WDR in Germany will also show the seasonal toon Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas (1×30′), which is being produced and distributed by Bristol-based Aardman Animations.

The story sees Shaun joined on the farm by a trio of llamas, who begin to take over, causing the flock of sheep to grow increasingly suspicious of the exotic animals’ intentions.

It will go into production following the completion of the previously announced Shaun the Sheep feature film, which is set for release in February 2015.

Shaun first appeared in Aardman’s 1995 Wallace & Gromit animated short A Close Shave and went on to star in his own CBBC toon, which has been sold into more than 170 countries.

Earlier this year the animated character was voted the UK’s favourite BBC children’s TV character of the past seven decades in a poll conducted by the UK magazine the Radio Times.

Broadcasters including Kika in Germany, ClanTV in Spain, France 3, Rai TV in Italy, NHK in Japan, CCTV in China and ABC in Australia air the series.
