Straight after the global success of Cold War drama Deutschland 83, Germany’s UFA Fiction explored the political and sexual revolution of 1950s Berlin in Ku’damm 56, focusing on the changing role of women only a few years after the end of World War II.

The action unfolds mainly at the Berlin dance school "Galant," where worlds collide and the struggle between prudishness and emancipation is carried out. The proprietor of the dance school, Caterina Schöllack, has three daughters whom she orders to integrate into this hierarchically structured society. Two of her daughters seem to abide by their mother's wish: Helga appears to have made a brilliant move with her marriage to the jurist Wolfgang von Boost. Nurse Eva does everything she can to get married to the Head Professor Fassbender. Only Monika, the middle daughter, rejects the given path and discovers rock 'n' roll for herself. Monika's story and that of her two sisters are exemplary for many lives in a time when a woman's life was determined by her place next to her husband. At the same time, however, the women of this generation were searching for a new female identity, and were inspired by the burgeoning demand for equal rights.

In the sequel Ku’damm 59, Monika and dance-partner Freddy are pursuing careers as musicians and dancers, while Caterina never leaves their side as their manager – forever mindful of social conventions. Meanwhile, Helga has come to terms with Wolfgang’s homosexuality and is trying to be a good mother. However, her love for Wolfgang and her desire for a middle-class lifestyle are put to the test once more when she discovers that her husband is having an affair. The marriage of Eva and Prof. Fassbender has yet to produce a child and Eva feels unable to live up to her role as a professor’s wife. When Monika’s life and career plans hit a brick wall, she decides that she wants a different future for herself and her daughter Dorli – and turns everyone’s lives upside down once again.

And what will happen next in this captivating family saga? Ku’damm 63 is coming soon, so stay tuned…
