Digital Colonialism

Ruptly - Documentary Collection

“It’s an extractive relationship; we’re not citizens, we are users.”

Criticism is growing that the Global North has found a new method for colonising Africa: technology. So far, Africa’s place in the digital value chain has been limited to its beginning and its end – as a source of rare raw materials, and as a dumping ground for digital hardware. Now largescale investment by tech giants of the USA and Europe is being touted as the great project of the future, and a central opportunity to free Africa from poverty. But behind the ‘free internet’ and promises of a ‘Silicon Savannah’, sceptics suspect there lies a more exploitative dynamic at play. In Digital Colonialism we ask the big question: who is really profiting here?
