Company Overview

Mainichi Broadcasting System, Inc.

MBS is known as a pioneer in the Japanese broadcasting industry. Tracing back through history, MBS was one of the first commercial radio stations in Japan, starting its first radio broadcasts in 1951 and later beginning terrestrial television broadcasting in 1959.

MBS operates in the largest broadcast area in Western Japan, the Kansai region, which has a population of about 22 million. This accounts for 17 percent of Japan’s total population, with 9.8 million households. Some of Japan’s major cities are also located in the region. MBS has its head office in Osaka, which is the business center of Kansai with new emerging businesses and innovative ideas. The ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara are also located in this area, and because of this, Kansai is historically known for its strong ties with Asia. MBS continues to broadcast programs that imbue the distinctive features of the local Kansai region, which is rich in history, tradition, and culture.

To enhance its capacity to produce content, MBS built a new annex with two main television studios, and had a grand opening in the spring of 2014. The new studios are equipped with the latest equipment and now serve as the base for producing consistent original content that reflects the uniqueness of the Kansai area.
