There’s still time for one more Hot Properties playlist before everyone heads off for their holidays. Here, we look at the latest titles on offer on C21’s Digital Screenings.

Drama programming leads the selection for July’s Hot Properties, following all the new scripted titles coming to market during the industry events of the past few weeks.

First up is North Sea Connection (A+E Networks), about a brother and sister who get embroiled with a Nordic drug cartel after a fishing trip turns into a North Sea drug run.

Meanwhile, Departure (Red Arrow Studios International) is described as a “high-octane conspiracy thriller about the shock disappearance of Flight 716,” starring Emmy winner Archie Panjabi and Oscar winner Christopher Plummer.

A Very Ordinary World (StudioCanal) puts a high-concept twist on the porn industry to deliver a “scathing critique of the macho world we live in,” according to the producers, while Pulse (Abacus Media Rights) combines sci-fi, horror and survival thriller to ask whether the modern human race can survive without the technology that defines our way of life today.

Period drama is also in the mix with Boundless (ZDF Studios), in which explorer Ferdinand Magellan leads an epic voyage in search of precious spices that would change man’s perception of the world and establish the existence of an ocean route west.

A pair of Japanese scripted series have also been highlighted for this month’s Hot Properties list. Connected (Nippon TV) is a drama about a homebound detective trying to solve a crime without leaving his room, with the help of his international online peers, while #Izakaya Shinkansen (Mainichi Broadcasting System) follows a salaryman in Japan who travels the country sampling regional food while on the train.

From Turkey comes Respect 2, continuing the story of a psychopath who revolts against the daily disrespects we choose to ignore or simply forget, while German telenovela Storm of Love – Calm Before the Storm (Bavaria Media International) is the latest new spin-off from one of the most successful European telenovelas, Storm of Love.

The TV movie format is always popular, so this month’s playlist includes Bukow & Koenig (Studio Hamburg Enterprises), also from Germany, in which a police officer with a seedy past teams up with a sharp-minded and straightforward criminal profiler to crack cases.

For more light-hearted scripted content, look no further than Nina & The Pig (Wild Bunch TV), in which a 16-year-old girl discovers that her transplanted heart valve came from a pig and tries to do something about it.

For buyers looking for factual, this month’s Hot Properties playlist has plenty on offer. American Dynasty (Banijay Rights) explores the impact of American dynasties including Rockefeller, Ford, Vanderbilt, Dupont, Kennedy and Bush.

More Americana comes in the form of Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix Live in Maui (DCD Rights), chronicling the rock icon’s visit to Maui in 1970 in a Grammy-nominated documentary that showcases unseen colour footage of his performance.

Commando: Britain’s Ocean Warriors (Hat Trick International) is a behind-the-scenes story of one of the most famous military units on earth, the Royal Marine Commandos, which are “globally renowned, nationally revered and yet widely misunderstood,” according to the producers.

Moving Houses (Cineflix Rights) looks at how charming cottages, historic villas and sleek designer pads are uprooted, chainsawed into pieces and trucked over some of the country’s trickiest terrain. Qatar – Between Boomtown & Burqa (Autentic Distribution) looks at the Gulf state to discover much more than a filthy-rich emirate full of forced labourers without any rights and businessmen with questionable practices.

For wildlife lovers, we have Battle of the Alphas (Blue Ant International), exploring the turf wars, food fights and mating mayhem that make everyday life a battleground for animals, while A Year On Planet Earth (ITV Studios), presented by Stephen Fry, reveals the incredible ways in which all life is impacted by our journey around the sun.

From Japan comes Kokkodesho: The Treasure Ship Performance of Nagasaki (Japan Program Catalog – BEAJ), showcasing a dynamic performance in which 40 men run through town over the span of three days, carrying and tossing a wooden float that weighs over a ton.

On the formats front, we have Tunnel of Love (Sony Pictures Television Formats), a dating show in which the participants’ best friends pick their suitor, while the July playlist also includes a couple of new titles for buyers of kids’ content.

Mush-Mush & the Mushables (Cake) is described as a “journey of self-discovery, told through exciting adventure and comedy,” while More Than This (Australian Children’s Television Foundation) is “a slice-of-life teen drama that explores the overwhelming, messy, difficult and beautiful experiences of five teenagers.”
