This month’s Hot Properties playlist is majoring on drama, with eight new titles for buyers to peruse, ranging from swashbuckling period pieces to contemporary bittersweet dramedies and everything in between.
First up is Murder in Provence (ITV Studios), which invites viewers to sun-drenched southern France for three intriguing murder mysteries in an atmospheric drama based on the novels by ML Longworth.
Another literary adaptation, All Those Things We Never Said (StudioCanal) is “a bittersweet comedy with soul,” according to the producers. Based on the bestselling novel by Marc Levy, it’s described as a “wryly fun father-daughter adventure about second chances and first love.”
Inspired by real events, the next drama series is Riding in Darkness (Wild Bunch TV), which follows four women and their path to standing up against an admired horse trainer revealed to be a sexual predator.
For fact-based drama of a different kind, check out Boundless (ZDF Studios), in which explorer Ferdinand Magellan leads an epic voyage in search of precious spices that would change man’s perception of the world and establish the existence of an ocean route west.
Next up is North Sea Connection (A+E Networks), about a brother and sister who get embroiled with a Nordic cartel after a fishing trip turns into a North Sea drug run.
From Japan come two new dramas: All But Divorced (TV Tokyo Corporation) tells a story of infidelity that turns into murder, while Radiation House II (Fuji Television Network) is a sequel to 2019 drama Radiation House and follows a radiologist who heads to the US to experiment with AI.
The final new drama on the playlist is TV movie Dr Dog (Bavaria Media International), about an innovative psychologist and his therapy dog who take on the tough cases even the patient has given up on.
On the factual front, this month we’ve highlighted several documentaries and factual series. Deep Water Salvage (Blue Ant International) follows the best marine salvage teams in the world as they race against the clock to recover ships wrecked by fierce storms. Meanwhile, Ambulance: Code Red (Cineflix Rights) captures every critical moment as Britain’s top doctors and paramedics do whatever it takes to save lives.
On the Wing (GAD) looks at real-life heroes – physicians, emergency doctors, farmers – who are all pilots and carry on their professions in territories at the ends of the earth. Looking at even more extreme professions, Exploration Volcano (Hat Trick International) follows volcanologist Christopher Horsley, a volcano access specialist, photographer and expedition guide, as he sets out to explore the most active lava volcanoes on Earth.
Factual with a different flavour comes in the form of World’s Most Punctual Train – Japan’s Shinkansen (Autentic Distribution), which explores the long-distance express train and its destinations, while MareTV (Studio Hamburg Enterprises) presents stories about people and the seas, recounted with captivating pictures, clarity and depth.
Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted (Abacus Media Rights), meanwhile, is an emotionally charged and deeply personal documentary about the creator of children’s television series including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet. Dark Side of Comedy (Vice Distribution) explores “the dark stories of addiction, suicide and self-destruction that lurk behind the laughter,” according to the producers.
This month’s playlist also includes Treasures With Bettany Hughes S2 (DCD Rights), in which the host lifts the lid on more fabulous and remarkable treasures of world civilisation.
For buyers looking for entertainment formats, we’ve highlighted The Tourists (Sony Pictures Television Formats), in which celebrities are taken out of their comfort zones as they explore different industries, challenging themselves to learn something new.
My Kitchen Rules Australia S12 (Banijay Rights) follows teams of two from each state of Australia that must do battle from their own kitchens, while Married at First Sight USA S15 (Red Arrow Studios International) is the supersized US version of Married at First Sight, described by the producers as “the world’s leading relationship show.”
Rounding out this month’s playlist are two animated series. Kangaroo Beach (Australian Children’s Television Foundation) follows four young animal friends – Pounce, Gemma, Neville and Frizzy – as they spend an action-packed summer at the spectacular Kangaroo Beach, training as junior cadets with their lifeguard heroes.
Dodo (Cake), meanwhile, is an animated school-based comedy series depicting the drama and awkwardness of school life, based on the multi-award-winning film and YouTube hit Not the End of the World.
That’s all for August, stay tuned for more Hot Properties in September!
