TALKING SHOP: Oscar-nominated Agnieszka Holland, the Polish director behind HBO miniseries Burning Bush, tells C21 why she thinks Polish TV drama can reach the same heights as Scandinavian.

The director and screenwriter says Poland needs “courage, talent and a bit of money” to rival broadcasters in Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the source of recent successes such as The Bridge, The Killing and Mammon.

“We have the creativity and innovation and we currently do TV very professionally,” Holland said. “But I think we need to create something that will be attractive to places outside of Poland and I think we are capable of that.”

Holland, who has also been lined up to direct two episodes of the forthcoming third season of Netflix’s House of Cards, also explains why she is teaming up with Polish production outfit ATM Grupa to develop a four-part miniseries based on the popular Breslau detective book series by Marek Krajewski.
