TALKING SHOP: Writer and producer Russell T Davies tells C21 about his new Channel 4 drama Cucumber, a series billed as exploring the passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life.

Cucumber, accompanied by sister shows Banana and Tofu, marks Davies’ first work with C4 since his groundbreaking gay drama Queer As Folk ended in 2000.

The Welshman once again teamed up with Queer As Folk producer Red Production Company (Happy Valley) for the three projects, all set in Manchester.

Cucumber follows a 46-year-old gay man whose life is changed following a catastrophic date, while Banana features younger characters. Tofu is a factual web series consisting of eight episodes that is described as an anarchic online guide to sex inspired by the dramas each week.

Davies, whose credits also include Bob & Rose (ITV), Dr Who and Torchwood (both BBC) and CBBC’s Wizard’s Vs Aliens, also tells us why a deliberate diversity policy is vital for television production and discusses why he has concerns about the future of the BBC.
